Glass Beach is a beach near Fort Bragg, named from a time when it was abundant with sea glass created from years of dumping garbage into an area of coastline near the northern part of the town.
History
In 1906, Fort Bragg residents established an official water dump site behind the Union Lumber Company onto what is now known as "Site 1". Most water-fronted communities had water dump sites discarding glass, appliances, and even vehicles. Locals referred to it as "The Dumps." Fires were often lit using Molotov cocktails to reduce the size of the trash pile.
When the original dump site filled up in 1943, the site was moved to what is now known as "Site 2", the active dump site from 1943 until 1949. When this beach became full in 1949, the dump was moved north to what is now known as "Glass Beach", which remained an active dump site until 1967.
The California State Water Resources Control Board and city leaders closed this area in 1967. Various cleanup programs were undertaken through the years to correct the damage. Over the next several decades, what was biodegradable in the dump sites simply degraded and all the metal and other items were eventually removed and sold as scrap or used in art. The pounding waves broke down the glass and pottery and tumbled those pieces into the small, smooth, colored pieces that often become jewelry-quality, which cover Glass Beach and the other two glass beaches (former dump sites) in Fort Bragg. ——————————————————————— Follow nk_aroundtheworld for more! ——————————————————————— Nikkor 24-70mm F2.8...

The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens are 47 acres of colorful beauty. With a rainbow assortment of different flowers, lush green forests, and a commanding ocean view, this northern coast botanical garden should definitely be on your list of places to see when you’re in Mendocino. 💐
Founded in 1961, the garden is one of the largest ones in California and hosts a variety of flora from around the world. Different blooms occur at different months of the year, ensuring that you’ll get to see flowers whenever you go. The bird watching is fantastic, and you’re surrounded by several scenic trails that take you into dense woodlands and bushes. Check the weather before you go—it’s often foggy on the northern coast, but that can make for a serene visit to the gardens. It’s a wonderful place to spend an hour or two admiring the beauty of life. 🌸
Can you believe that this "nest" is actually a mushroom!? Well, it sure is! Let’s learn something: 👏
This species is aptly named "Bird`s Nest Fungus" and it`s quite a fascinating mushroom. Each of those "eggs" (scientifically known as "peridioles") is actually a capsule full of spores. When it rains, droplets splash into the "nest" and disturb the peridioles, ideally splashing them into the air. The peridioles of many species of bird nest fungi have a string attached to the end of them. When a peridiole is flung airborne, the string trails behind it and then sticks or coils itself around anything nearby that it comes in contact with. In this way, the spores have a more auspicious chance of being dispersed. ✨💨
This mushroom doesn`t look terribly small, does it? Well, it`s actually quite little - on average a "nest" is typically measured at approximately 5-7mm in diameter! When I first spotted this fungus several years ago, I was shocked. Based on photos I`d seen, I had assumed they were much larger! 🍄📏
I grew up coming to Fort Bragg every summer camping at MacKerricher State Park. We are in the home stretch toward fifteen. January always feels like a month of deep reflection on the life of this sweet soul that I get to nurture and prepare for the world. As he embarks on fifteen and we peruse the course catalog for his sophomore year of high school, as we talk about college and beyond, I know that the empty nest is looming and so are his grand adventures. My heart is permanently oscillating between the melancholy arrangement of absolute joy and deep sorrow. To have been given this gift of a son, to have spent years cultivating his roots, and to have witnessed the emergence of these wings that will help him embark on his many journeys, that is what makes my heart sing. It`s not every day that you`ll spot this many bowling balls on a beach! Or even any, at all. Schooner Gulch Beach (Bowling Ball Beach) is one of the most unique spots on the entire Mendocino Coast. *Make sure you check the tides before visiting as these are only viewable at low tide.
From Visit Mendocino County: The “balls” are actually concretions, which are far more resilient than the mudstone that once surrounded them. Over millions of years, this has eroded away under the constant onslaught of the Pacific Ocean, forming the cliffs that line the shore behind the beach and leaving the tougher “bowling balls” behind.

There are many beautiful beaches in California it’s true. And when you time it right, every single one will give you some pretty amazing views 😍. . . This beach is by far my favorite one we have near us! If you time it right, sunset is simply fantastic. The light hit the bridge just right and the beams shine through it. Just past this bridge is a wide open space of smooth deep sandy beach and a stunning view of the ocean 🌊. . . I do not know how I have not shared this photo yet! It’s got to be one of my favorites, it’s from our trip we took a couple months back. We stayed at our favorite dog friendly motel thebeachcombermotel which right out side of the motel room, past the inviting deck with the fire pits is this beach, our favorite beach. It doesn’t matter the time of year, it’s never disappointing and I’m so glad we got to go. The sunrise is always so breathtaking at the beach. . .
