Who says you can’t have a winery right on the ocean? As it turns out, lots of people said just that to Sally Ottoson. And yet, that didn’t deter her from leaving her winemaking job in Napa Valley to found Pacific Star Winery. Perched on a beautiful bluff above the ocean, about 12 miles north of Fort Bragg, Pacific Star is like a slice of serene coastal paradise. So, pull up a chair overlooking the ocean and let Sally and her incredible staff treat you to a uniquely delicious array of rare and unusual varietal wines.

In a nod to her immigrant past (her family settled here from Scandinavia in 1861) Sally sources heritage varietal grapes with deep Californian roots. You may not be familiar with Charbono, Carignon or Tannat, but Sally blends them into the most delightful and delicious wines you’ve probably never tasted before. “It’s a sensory experience,” she’ll tell you, which certainly rings true. Pacific Star Winery will delight all your senses with wonderful wines, whales that roll through right off the rocks, a spectacular setting, cool ocean breezes and warm hospitality.

A Message On Water Conservation
From The Students at Fort Bragg’s Dana Gray Elementary
When you visit Fort Bragg, please be mindful that we are facing a severe water shortage, with a Stage 1 Water Alert declared on July 26, 2022. Over the last few years, the City’s water sources have dropped lower than has seen in more than 40 years. Please assist us with conserving water by:
- Limiting or taking shorter showers
- Asking that towels and sheets in hotels not be changed every day
- Limiting the dishes and linens that need to be washed in restaurants
- Shutting off the water while brushing your teeth or washing your hands
- Making certain that all faucets, hoses, and water fountains are shut tight
Thank you in advance for embracing the mindset of a responsible and sustainable visitor.
As you know, the Pandemic has interrupted how, when and where we travel. As our counties and states continue to revise restrictions, we are happy to welcome visitors. However, before you travel, we ask that you check with the State’s COVID-19 website to ensure that your destination can accommodate your visit. Additionally, please check the Mendocino County COVID-19 website.
In Preparation:
- Stay Up To Date On Vaccinations – Getting the most recent vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and others
- Check the CDC COVID-19 County Check for Mendocino County for recommended prevention steps.
- Be Flexible – The regulations on leisure travel may change as the number of COVID-19 cases rise and fall.
- Bring Masks – Face coverings may be required in certain spaces. Make sure everyone in your group has at least one mask when they arrive.
- Be Well – Please do not travel if you are sick. Fort Bragg has a limited healthcare system and businesses are relaxing cancellation policies in case of illness.
While Here:
- Mask Up When Asked – Acceptable masks include cloth with at least two layers of woven cloth, a hospital-grade mask or N95 mask.
- Social Distancing – Please be consolidate of those who prefer to maintain distance and cover coughs and sneezes into your elbow or tissue.
- Be Considerate – Remember that we’re all in this together, and while the current situation can be challenging, our goal is to come together as a community so we can all get back to normal as soon as possible.

The Magic Murals
You can immediately become acquainted with Derek DiOrio’s work when you stroll through Fort Bragg’s downtown. He is the artist behind the street banner series and the accompanying Walking Tour of Fort Bragg map – available at most downtown businesses and Fort Bragg hotels. He is the designer behind that campaign and many other notable commercial projects in the North Coast area.
Originally from New England, Derek migrated to the North Coast for college at Humboldt State, where he studied the visual arts. This migration west led him up and down the coast of California including Los Angeles, to South America and Europe where he painted murals along the way. When it felt time for his nomadic chapter to end and the desire to put down some roots began, he landed back on the North Coast. As Derek frankly puts it, “I came for the ocean, but I stayed for the people.”
Derek describes a tightly knit and unpretentious community of artists and makers of many kinds in Fort Bragg, from woodworkers to butchers to painters and cobblers, that feels like one big extended family. Derek’s art has taken flight over the last few years – his commercial graphic design projects and his multiple other artistic pursuits in painting and woodworking. He has a small fishing boat and studio space and wood shop in Westport, just north of town. “I chose to base my life on where I wanted to be and what makes me happy, and to make the artist’s life work, no matter what.” Which he seems to be doing well at, while making a name for himself among the North Coast artist community.
“There are so many things in this tiny community that is an art form. It inspires me to want to work with my hands more and pursue different artistic paths. Artists, and all people, want to have the space to pursue what they are passionate about. You can do that here. It’s freedom.”
Local Tip:
Visit Derek’s murals in central Fort Bragg: on the alley that transects E. Redwood Avenue between Franklin and MacPherson Streets, and another mid-way along the Coastal Trail.

Whale Fest
Whale Fest is taking over Downtown Fort Bragg on the weekend of March 15th through 17th and, like the migrating leviathans we celebrate, this year’s festivities will be bigger and better than ever. There’s a Downtown Wine Walk, the Fort Bragg Beer Festival, a 10k/5k Whale Run and Walk, a craft fair, live music, food trucks and much more.
Could there be a better time to visit Fort Bragg?
Of course, the whales will be moving through all winter, so if March 15th-17th doesn’t work out, no worries. Come anytime through April to see the amazing migration of Fort Bragg’s favorite cetaceans

Rotary Beer Festival is back. Save the date and join us on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at the Eagles Hall (210 N. Corry) from Noon to 4:00 PM for an incredible selection of beer and some great live music from The Green Fields. Tickets are $40 and food will be available for purchase. So come taste some ales and watch the whales at this benefit for Fort Bragg Rotary Club with proceeds going to scholarships as well as local and international projects.

Join MendoParks for free guided whale walks at MacKerricher State Park on Fridays and Saturdays in March, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. While you’re there, check out the gray whale skeleton articulation next to the Visitor Center.

Looking to get up close and personal with Fort Bragg’s migratory whales? Multiple whale watching charters depart out of Noyo Harbor throughout the season. You’ll find them below on the coastal activities page. Be sure to reach out to them directly for current weather conditions and departure times.
The Whale Trail
The Whale Trail is an organization committed to inspiring appreciation and protection of marine mammals, and several designated whale trail sites are in or near Fort Bragg, including Mendocino Botanical Gardens, Noyo Center for Marine Science and Laguna Point at MacKerricher State Park.
